Dr. Leon Su was born in Taiwan and grew up in Orange County, California. He obtained his bachelor’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and had a five-year career as a software and hardware engineer.​ Dr. Su received his Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) from New York University. He graduated at the top of his class, was heavily involved in research, and was inducted into the Omicron Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society. Intrigued by the field of orthodontics as a merge of engineering, art, and science, Dr. Su specialized in orthodontics at Rutgers University. ​He also went beyond the basic requirements to practice and voluntarily went through the rigorous process to become a Board-Certified Orthodontist, a status only one out of three orthodontists have achieved in the US.
